One Put, One Call Option To Know About for McDonald's

Consistently, one of the more popular stocks people enter into their stock options watchlist at Stock Options Channel is McDonald's Corp (Symbol: MCD). So this week we highlight one interesting put contract, and one interesting call contract, from the June 2018 expiration for MCD. The put contract our YieldBoost algorithm identified as particularly interesting, is at the $135 strike, which has a bid at the time of this writing of $3.95. Collecting that bid as the premium represents a 2.9% return against the $135 commitment, or a 3.1% annualized rate of return (at Stock Options Channel we call this the YieldBoost ).
Selling a put does not give an investor access to MCD's upside potential the way owning shares would, because the put seller only ends up owning shares in the scenario where the contract is exercised. So unless McDonald's Corp sees its shares fall 11.7% and the contract is exercised (resulting in a cost basis of $131.05 per share before broker commissions, subtracting the $3.95 from $135), the only upside to the put seller is from collecting that premium for the 3.1% annualized rate of return.
Worth considering, is that the annualized 3.1% figure actually exceeds the 2.5% annualized dividend paid by McDonald's Corp, based on the current share price of $152.71. And yet, if an investor was to buy the stock at the going market price in order to collect the dividend, there is greater downside because the stock would have to lose 11.7% to reach the $135 strike price.
Always important when discussing dividends is the fact that, in general, dividend amounts are not always predictable and tend to follow the ups and downs of profitability at each company. In the case of McDonald's Corp, looking at the dividend history chart for MCD below can help in judging whether the most recent dividend is likely to continue, and in turn whether it is a reasonable expectation to expect a 2.5% annualized dividend yield.

Turning to the other side of the option chain, we highlight one call contract of particular interest for the June 2018 expiration, for shareholders of McDonald's Corp (Symbol: MCD) looking to boost their income beyond the stock's 2.5% annualized dividend yield. Selling the covered call at the $165 strike and collecting the premium based on the $3.85 bid, annualizes to an additional 2.6% rate of return against the current stock price (this is what we at Stock Options Channel refer to as the YieldBoost ), for a total of 5.1% annualized rate in the scenario where the stock is not called away. Any upside above $165 would be lost if the stock rises there and is called away, but MCD shares would have to climb 7.9% from current levels for that to occur, meaning that in the scenario where the stock is called, the shareholder has earned a 10.4% return from this trading level, in addition to any dividends collected before the stock was called.
The chart below shows the trailing twelve month trading history for McDonald's Corp, highlighting in green where the $135 strike is located relative to that history, and highlighting the $165 strike in red:

The chart above, and the stock's historical volatility, can be a helpful guide in combination with fundamental analysis to judge whether selling the June 2018 put or call options highlighted in this article deliver a rate of return that represents good reward for the risks. We calculate the trailing twelve month volatility for McDonald's Corp (considering the last 251 trading day MCD historical stock prices using closing values, as well as today's price of $152.71) to be 13%.
In mid-afternoon trading on Monday, the put volume among S&P 500 components was 814,320 contracts, with call volume at 1.38M, for a put:call ratio of 0.59 so far for the day. Compared to the long-term median put:call ratio of .65, that represents high call volume relative to puts; in other words, buyers are showing a preference for calls in options trading so far today. Find out which 15 call and put options traders are talking about today .

Seawater is the secret to long-lasting Roman concrete

Roman piers and other harbour structures built using an ancient cement mix have lasted for millennia. Ancient Romans built concrete sea walls that have withstood pounding ocean waves for more than 2,000 years. Now, an international team has discovered a clue to the concrete’s longevity: a rare mineral forms during chemical reactions between the concrete and seawater that strengthen the material. Structural engineers might be able to use these insights to make stronger,  more-sustainable concrete , says team leader Marie Jackson, a geologist at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She and her colleagues report their findings on 3 July in  American Mineralogist 1 . In earlier work, Jackson and colleagues reported some of the unusual chemistry of Roman concrete, such as the presence of a rare mineral known as aluminium tobermorite 2 . For the new study, the scientists took samples of Roman harbour concrete to the Advanced Light Source, an X-ray synchrotron ...

5 Dating Tips for Straight Girls From a Gay Guy

Hey girls, let’s talk. For over a decade, I’ve had the privilege of playing the role of gay best friend to many intelligent, funny and gorgeous women throughout my career as a practicing homosexual. Gay guys and straight gals have a special bond due to our common interests (e.g. men) and our lack of desire to sleep with one another. On the flip side, gays have a unique relationship with our straight male buddies because we are not in competition with them for you. As a result, straight guys often gab with us about the stuff girls do that cost them a call back. This article may be in violation of bro code, but I’m going to share some intel anyway. Consider yourself warned: gross generalizations will be made. Shut The F**k Up Sometimes Women talk a lot more than men. Science backs it up. According to a University of Maryland  study , women utter more words per day—about 20,000 to men’s 7,000. Listen, it’s not your fault you developed language and reading skills ...
